Christmas Day

	Long ago and far away
a small child heard his father say
"I must go and you must stay
but I'll return on Christmas Day
on Christmas Day in the morning.

The sun hung low in the eastern sky
as the soldier kissed his son goodbye
a single tear in the father's eye
but they were both too brave to cry
on Christmas Day in the morning.

	The years went by unceasingly
	the adolescent watched the sea
and wondered where the man might be
who made his vow so faithfully
on Christmas Day in the morning.

	Twenty Christmas Days have flown
and years like leaves by winds are blown
the young man to a soldier grown
he's joined the army of the Rhone
on Christmas Day in the morning.

One year later to the day
the young man hears his father say
as the bullet drains his life away
"I love you, Son, it's Christmas Day
it's Christmas Day in the morning.
