Pantoum

When the eagle lands high on the mountain
at the end of a lifetime of striving
and I pause to reflect in the fountain
is the pain worth the joy of arriving?

At the end of a lifetime of striving
	recalling the anguish and pleasure
is the pain worth the joy of arriving
will the sorrows be matched to the treasure?

	Recalling the anguish and pleasure
as I gaze at the mountains above me
will the sorrows be matched to the treasure
take the measure of all those who love me?

As I gaze at the mountains above me
and I pause to reflect in the fountain
take the measure of all those who love me
when the eagle lands high on the mountain.
