Cell

Did your thin fingers
reach through the bars toward me,

my hand barely out of your grasp?
I talked to you as I rubbed your feet.

Did you think I didn't care?
Did you shrink against the cement walls

of your mind, remembering in some version
our love, although maybe not my name?

Did your voice remain silent,
knowing only that you were caged,

not in your lover's arms? You only
wanted to go home. Avoiding my eyes,

you counted every motion in your room
until you could no longer sing your body's song.
